The St James’ Anglican Mart
How it started:
The Mart was established as an “op-shop” in 1986 by a group of enthusiastic women and their Parish priest, wanting to serve the local community.
Where to find us:
The Mart is located on the corner of Patton and Comstock Streets in South Broken Hill, in what was once the chemist building.
When we’re open:
The Mart sells pre-loved goods six days a week, Monday-Saturday, from 10am to 1pm.
What we do:
Volunteering at the Mart is a way of giving back to the community. Some workers serve in the shopfront while others unpack, wash, iron, price and ready the goods for sale. Clean clothes that are no longer wearable are cut for rags which are purchased by local businesses.
After covering running costs, the Mart donates a percentage of its proceeds to charity. Recipients have included The Flying Doctors, Ronald McDonald House and Silverlea, to name a few. Some proceeds go to the church where it is used for a variety of missions, both local and further afield.
What we sell: (subject to availability through donations)
Clothing – for men, women, children and babies; including ‘After-Five’ apparel.
Shoes, socks, undies, sleepwear, school uniforms.
Coats, hats, scarves, hair accessories, handkerchiefs, bags, belts, ties.
Jewellery, watches, soaps, gift items, photo frames, cards, gift-wrap.
Books, CDs, DVDs, even the odd LP.
Linen, blankets, cushions, wool, knitting needles, craft supplies.
Kitchen items, glassware, crockery, cutlery, vases, ornaments.
Small electrical goods (checked & tagged by a licensed electrician).
Toys, board games, jigsaw puzzles.
Dog blankets.
Occasional fancy-dress items and lots of other odds and ends!
Who uses the Mart:
The Mart helps families in need where possible, but many people simply call in for a good bargain. Some use the Mart as a ‘drop-in’ spot for a friendly chat. Tourists find their way to our door, often seeking items they’ve forgotten to pack for their holiday. Even the film crews love our Mart
The bigger picture:
We’re all very aware of the importance of recycling. Crops like cotton use a lot of precious water, so the fashion industry, in particular, is an industry most in need of recycling to save our planet!
Can I donate?
All clean, saleable donations are gratefully received. Deliver directly to the shop (back door access available for car deliveries) during our opening hours (10am to 1pm). Unfortunately, we don’t have space for large furniture items.
Volunteer requirements:
All workers must have appropriate references as well as a Working With Children Check, and are required to go through a online “Safe Ministries” Program. Support is available, if needed, for you to achieve these requirements. Contact Reverend Helen Ferguson on 0429 874 402 for more details.
